Two big weekends outdoors, plus a night away at Colorado Adventure Point. Tents, a campfire, cooking outside, and a lot of running around in the dark with flashlights.

For most scouts this is the part they remember. It's also where the quieter skills show up — packing your own bag, setting up a tent with your family, leaving a site cleaner than you found it. Families camp together; nobody drops a scout off.

Every scout gets a block of pine, four wheels, and four nails. What comes out the other side is entirely up to them and whoever helps them cut, sand, weigh, and paint it.

Race day is loud. Cars run in heats down a track, everyone cheers for everyone, and there are awards for speed and for design — so the kid whose car looks like a shark still goes home happy.

Twice a year the pack shows up for someone else. In November we rake leaves for neighbors who can't manage it themselves, and in April we clean up Little Dry Creek for Earth Day.

This is the part of Scouting that's easiest to skip and hardest to replace. A morning of raking teaches a six-year-old something a badge can't: that a neighborhood is a thing you take care of, and that showing up counts.

Mondays are the backbone of the year. Dens meet in small grade-level groups to work on adventures, and the whole pack gathers on alternating Mondays to hand out awards and do something together.

Den meetings are where the badge work happens. Pack meetings are where a scout gets called up in front of everyone and handed what they earned — which, at this age, is the whole point.

Committee meetings are open to any parent — that’s where the calendar and the budget get decided. They aren’t on the calendar above; ask a leader for the next one.

Not everything has to build a skill. The pool party in August is how we kick off the year and meet new families, and movie night in October is pajamas, a blanket, popcorn, and a screen.

These are the low-effort, high-turnout nights — the easiest ones to bring a friend who's thinking about joining.

Once a year every scout walks in one rank and comes out the next — Lion to Tiger, Tiger to Wolf, all the way to Arrow of Light. We call the ceremony the Cubinator, and yes, there is a machine.

Behind the silliness it's the most important night of the year. A scout only moves up after finishing the adventures for their rank, so crossing that stage is a full year of work made visible. Fifth graders finishing Arrow of Light cross over toward Scouts BSA.
